EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena)
What is EVP ?
EVP (Electronic voice phenomena)
- while recording to a tape through a microphone or to a video tape with your
camera, often some mysterious intelligible voices, which have no known physical
explanation can be also saved. These voices are not heard during the recording
process. They are very various - from clear human voice or whispering up to
robotic noisy talking; from single word or screaming up to song or a message.
Usually they speak directly to the person recording the tape. They are mostly
very quiet and somewhere in backround, so you do not notice them at first,
but when usin filters to clear the other sounds, you can have very clear examples.
Ofthen these voices are using other sounds to generate theyre message, for
example a white noyse of radio. Some of these voices are very friendly, trying
to talk to you or even answer to your questions, others are angry, ´cause
You are Live ! Despite years of study, the origin of these voices is still
a mystery. We don´t know how they come to a tape, but we know, that
they do exist and try to say something to us...
How to record an EVP ?!?
What
You need is a tape recorder (either cassette or reel to reel); a decent quality
external microphone - if recording with internal - the noise of recorder will
mask the voices.(I use a Shure BG 2.1); new low noise tapes (for example 60
min TDK DJ2 chrome tape); pait of earphones ( full ear covering ones are the
best - for exampleTechnics RP-HT600); a generator of white noise (AM radio;
stereo or television set to non transmitting station). You can also generate
white noise with Your PC using software like Cool Edit. To start recording
turn on Your white nose generator (the volume level shouldn´t be too
loud - so you can hear your own voice), then start a recorder and let it run
alone for a minute (to get a noise print for PC); then say clearly Yor name,
and when and where You are recording. Then you can ask questions to these
voices, leaving a pause of 3 min. between each question. It is usual to feel
uncomfortable at first to talk with nobody. As You progress, it comes more
comfortable. Best is to envision yourself speaking to someone long distance,
in an attempt to obtain as much information as possible about their surroundings.Try
to be positive and open - minded. I suggest You to record 10 min. It is long
tme enough not to be very tired and to get some results. While recording, try
to make no unnessesary noises and be shure the place is quiet enough. While
recording, put down all the feelings and stange thngs happened (for example
tape counter 1009 - pencil dropped down from th e table by itself...). I also
suggest to plan your question sbefore the recording session. Before ending
the session, say that you gonna stop the recorder now and let it run for a
more couple of minutes, to record any reactions for this.
How to
clear EVP from surrounding noises
When
you have finished your recording, rewind the tape and plug it to You PC (the
line out-line in connection is the best). Then run a sound recording software
(sound recorder, Cool Edit, Saw Plus, ect) with highest qality (44100hz suggested). Then
maximise the level and use filter with first couple of seconds (with noise
only) as a noiseprint and clear the recording. Maximise again. Listen to result
couple of times, noticing eny change in the sound. If nesessary repeat the
filtering and maximising. PS ! EVP voices use white noise or eny other sound
to generate their voice. So be patient and concentrated, to catch eny difference
in the sound of the recording. Dont listen only to the empty parts of recording,
but also the backround of your own speaking. Notice any little change in sound
or backround, mark it, and try to ampify and filter it to maximum clearness.
